Reuters released an investigation into the Indian IT company BellTroX InfoTech Services, which helped clients hack the accounts of politicians and investors. This was reported on June 9 by the agency, citing former employees of the company.
BellTroX started its work in 2013. According to Reuters, in seven years she hacked into more than 10,000 accounts of officials in European and Latin American countries, investors, environmental activists and members of the judiciary.
The company obtained access to the accounts by sending malicious emails. At the same time, some requests were disguised as an authorization page on Facebook.
The head of the company, Sumit Gupta, in a conversation with reporters, denies any wrongdoing by BellTroX. According to him, the firm only provides assistance to private detectives.
Reuters notes that in 2015 the United States indicted Gupta in a hacking case. Then two private detectives said that they paid the company to hack the accounts of employees in the field of marketing. In 2017, Gupta was declared a fugitive from justice. The US Department of Justice declined to comment on information about the investigation.
At the end of October, 2019 Reuters reported that hackers managed to gain access to phones of high-ranking officials and military men from at least 20 states because of vulnerability of the WhatsApp messenger.
